ABOUT IMSU

Imo State University (IMSU) is a public university located in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Established in 1981 by the Imo State Government, it was created to expand access to higher education in the southeastern region of the country. The university operates under the motto “Excellence in Service” and has grown into one of the most recognized state universities in Nigeria. The institution originally started in Uturu when Imo and Abia were still a single state. However, following the creation of Abia State in 1991, the university was relocated to Owerri in 1992, while the Uturu campus later became Abia State University (ABSU). This transition marked a major turning point in the development and identity of IMSU as it established its permanent base in the state capital. IMSU offers a wide range of academic programs across multiple faculties, including Medicine, Law, Engineering, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Education, and the Humanities. These programs are accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and are structured to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed in today’s workforce. The university primarily operates from its main campus in Owerri, with additional campuses in Orlu and Okigwe that support specialized programs, particularly in health-related fields. Over the years, IMSU has built a reputation for producing competent graduates and maintaining a vibrant student environment, supported by the lively social and academic atmosphere of Owerri.
